HIV and AIDS

HIV, or Human Immunodeficiency Virus, is a vicious virus that attacks the immune system, leaving patients prone to becoming seriously ill when exposed to AIDS related illnesses and infections.

AIDS, Acquired Immune Deficiency syndrome, is the broad term given to illnesses and infections that are experienced by people living with HIV. HIV is transmitted through bodily fluids and damages the body's immune system, decreasing its ability to fight illnesses and infections. When diagnosed and managed early, patients with HIV are unlikely to experience AIDS related illnesses, however in other cases when HIV has severely damaged the body even a common cold can be fatal.

Can medical cannabis cure HIV/AIDS?

No, medical cannabis is not a cure for HIV or AIDS.

It has been shown to help HIV/AIDS patients manage some of the symptoms and also reduce the burden of side effects from certain medications. However, there is no scientific evidence to prove that medical cannabis can cure HIV or AIDS.

Can you get a medical cannabis prescription if you have HIV or AIDS?

Yes, medical cannabis is a legal prescription option for those with HIV or AIDS in the UK.

Currently, the NHS is unwilling to offer cannabis-based treatments for HIV/AIDS patients, but private cannabis clinics (like Releaf) offer a range of options for those living with HIV/AIDS.

What symptoms of HIV/AIDS can medical cannabis help with?

Medical cannabis may offer relief from some of the common symptoms associated with HIV or AIDS, including nausea, loss of appetite, and chronic pain. It may also help with managing anxiety and depression often experienced by those living with the disease.

Are there any risks associated with taking medical cannabis for HIV/AIDS?

As with any medication, there are potential side effects when using medical cannabis. These can include dizziness, dry mouth, and changes in mood, increased blood pressure, higher anxiety levels, and racing thoughts.

Your prescribing specialist will work with you to minimise the chances of any side effects and help you find the most effective treatment option for your unique needs.
